MAYANADHI..!
AS SIMPLE AS IT IS!
Prologue
When was the last time the storyline, lead characters of a
movie has been stuck in your mind, still after you leave the theatres or 2 days
after that? Well “Mayanadhi” can be categorized as that kind of a movie which
haunts your mind even without any usual stereotypes which the so called new
generation movies holds.
I always believed in the talent of Aashiq Abu as a director
and what he is capable to produce, if he is molded in a right way. Even in his
illogical flops like gangster, idukki gold, rani padmini, a critic can take
back something which in some way proves that there is some kind of uniqueness
as a filmmaker in him, even though the above mentioned films are very hard to
digest for a normal viewer. Here he delivers something which can be termed as
his career best one and prior to this Salt n pepper, 22fk, where considered as
so.
Experience
Here I would like to introduce a term called
“Unpredictability of the predictable”, and I personally feel that this is the
term where the whole movie is confined around. Director of the movie thoroughly
goes with the notion that they absolutely tend to avoid the unpredictable
factor in the movie, yet you as a viewer look for something unpredictable. As
you can see the dialogues are cut throat straight through-and there is no way
you can see any hint of dramatics anywhere (Special thanks to Shyam Pushkaran).
Even in the case of cinematography, the frames are not catchable, but still
they hold something that sticks to the movie.
Focusing on my above notion
(“Unpredictability of the predictable”), I can notice that the kissing, sex
scenes which is showcased in the movie has taken every viewer to a surprised/amused
mindset, but I definitely feel that those scenes were a necessity in the movie
in order to be in the flow. Tovino delivering one of his career best
performances, and Aishwarya simply stands apart. I was in a really confused
mindset after the movie-Why she was so much underutilized in her debut movie (Njandukalude
Nattil Oru Idevela)? That was one of the amazingly raw performance by a lead
heroine in recent times.
BOTTOM LINE
I once read an article in a newspaper by a serious film
critic and it goes like this,
“You know what these so called “new-gen-feel-good” movies lacking?
It is the absence of a solid straight through climax. They have a good story
line, they indeed start well, they will definitely have those feel good scenes
here and there, but when it comes to the climax they tend to add some
“unpredictability” element to the movie which will make their so called
expected viewers to raise their satisfaction bar to another level –and at last
there is no climax at all! I recommend all these film makers to watch some old
Malayalam movies and get some inspiration from them”
I must confess that I strictly second to those opinions
which are mentioned above, but here climax is the real show stealer. As I said
in the beginning, this one is “AS SIMPLE AS IT IS“, you will be in the flow
till the end just like a Magical River (Mayanadhi).
