MINNAL MURALI
Minnal Murali is riveting from the word go. Even from the announcement of the title to the suspicious incidents which happened around the sets to the Netflix promotions, Minnal Murali was the most awaited release after the star studded Marakkar from the Malayalam film industry. There may be several opinions around switching this one to an OTT release, but the main aim was to cater a larger pool of viewers, which worked well at the end.
The point where Basil Joseph, the director succeeds the expectations is when he established a beautifully crafted village with all the lead characters and then the supernatural element is added on the top of it without disturbing the core of the movie. Even though you couldn't see a great solid script, the film is often build on characters acting according to the situations with precise timing. There are only a few high octane moments in the film, but the makers made it absolutely compelling along with some intriguing background scores.
When you build the characters of antagonist and protagonist so carefully, there are very few areas where you could misfire. The whole plot of the movie including the lead superhero revolves around the character helmed by Somasundaram, the protagonist, such is his effortless performance. There are beautifully crafted shots, excellent frames, apt BGM's and then there is Sameer Thahir and Shaan Rahman. Ending of the film undoubtedly has to be one of the most visually enigmatic one that you could see in a Malayalam film.
And how can I define Tovino's performance? Career best? Nevertheless, can't imagine anyone other than Tovino pulling off this character.
Minnal Murali is a benchmark, both in terms of film making quality and promotional gimmick's. Many films should look at how the former was showcased and delivered to the end viewers. There are a bunch of young director's in Malayalam film Industry and you look at them, you know there are superheroes behind the screen too.
Kudos Basil Joseph and Team !
