SOORARAI POTTRU

With back to back flops for Surya in big screen and an enigmatic first look cum teaser of Soorarai Pottru, the hype for this movie was much high even before it was released. Apparently OTT platforms became a revelation during this lock down and the makers decided to give this film a shot on the former. There were humungous controversies revolved around Surya and Jyothika during the OTT release of 'Ponmagal Vandhal' as the distributors and theater owners were against this boon of OTT releases which they thought would directly result in their business. On top of all these issues, Surya and its makers decided for the OTT release of Soorarai Pottru !

In spite of all the above problems, Surya and co delivers one of the finest drama of recent times. I saw glimpses of old Surya in this film and it would be such a confidence booster for him to come back on screen with such a tremendous performance. Inspired from true events and amalgamated with fictional elements, ' Soorarai Pottru' will be a treat for Surya fans which would have been a great feast if it was released in big screen. Casting of this film seems to be a amateur at first, but when moving forward all the characters fits into the mould quite well. Aparna Balamurali as the lead heroine has delivered an impeccable performance along with Urvashi as Surya's mother. Minimal number of songs has uninterrupted the flow of the movie. GV Prakash has done a commendable job in creating some unorthodox music sequences which may be in hit charts for some period of time.

When it comes to inspirational movies, viewers starts predicting a climax which may serve as a feel good ending for the movie. But Soorarai Pottru begs to differ by inflicting an empathetic element in the last thirty minutes of the film which makes it a serious gem of a movie. With an intriguing story line and stunning visuals, I still feel the effort of the makers would be undermined since they have released the movie in an OTT platform. Any ways, Soorarai Potru is that movie which may serve as a bench mark for Surya. And If you have failed consecutively in life, this film is a must watch!
