THE TRIAL OF CHICAGO 7
Watching films based on true stories is such an overwhelming and underwhelming experience at the same time. The first thing is you tend to know the whole story line and the ending which makes it a little dull to sit through. Leaving apart the fictional elements added in films to make it more cinematic, there is no room or scope for any surprises in the story line. Apparently, the one thing which makes these true stories memorable is the characters and the places where these movies takes you. Even though you know the whole story line, it is still a enthralling experience to witness the events unfold as it is in the original.
The trial at Chicago 7 is a court room drama which has its moments and keeps the viewers engaged through out the whole span. Casting an all star cast has made it easy for the makers to deliver in terms of performance and the re-creation of the whole era of 60's was visually stunning. One special mention must go to the editor, who has made the non - linear flow of film into something meaningful by adding flashback scenes without interrupting the real flow of the film.
There was a freshness in each frame, and the makers focused less on the drama elements to remove stereotypical notions and emphasized more on dialogues which was witty to the core. I have never seen a court room drama where the funny elements overrides the drama moods on a whole in a movie. This may not be the best court room movie ever, but it is certainly a one which is meant to be shelved in your list. With the addition of a an empathic ending, the trial of Chicago 7 will stay in the hearts of every filmgoer and easily one of the best films released in 2020.
