NAVARASA

 

Every time when Netflix launches an Indian project, the initial hype attached to it is too high to get unnoticed. At a time when theatrical films are facing a major crisis, Maniratnam, along with a stellar crew plans on something interesting and thus Navarasa was born. Portayed as the name suggests, Navarasa shows all the nine 'rasa's' compiled into nine episodes of a webseries, first of its kind in Tamil Industry. With Amazon Prime getting spectacular films, Hotstar bagging those Marvel films, Netflix post Sacred Games and Money Heist hasn't made a huge impact in the Indian market. With much hyped Dhanush starrer 'Jagame Thanthiram' not faring well, Navarasa seems like the one which would be a breakthrough for Netflix.

Navarasa comprises of great directors in the likes of Priyadarshan, GVM, Karthik Subbaraj, Karthik Naren and even Aravind Swamy directing an episode. With all the attraction, this series doesn't fall short on making, but could have really focused on some quality content. With only handful of 3-4 episodes which can be considered as something different, rest of them doesn't match up to the expected benchmark. Vijay Sethupathy starring 1st episode, Karthik Naren's short science fiction, Aravind Swamy and Priyadarshan directed flicks has made some impact comparing to the others. One of the most disappointing has to be undoubtedly the love version of Surya starrer episode directed by GVM. Former known for his serious romantic films has been just a shadow of his previous movies even though Karthik has done a stellar job in producing one of the best albums for this epiode.

Apparently most of us have seen some great movies produced in this lock down period and that is why even a star studded Navarasa couldn't match up with the recent OTT clashes. Makers will not consider making a second season of this webseries, looking on how it couldn't deliver what it was expected of. Nevertheless, Netflix still has a market in Indian industry, and most of the viewers tend to follow it more seriously, but movies are not catering the needs as expected. May be an another Money Heist season could definitely do the trick for them!
